The increase in risk of prostate cancer among middle-aged male and female steroid abusers may relate to the decline in testosterone production (Wang et al. 2006; De Vito et al. 2008; de Vito and Prehn 2009) . Furthermore, although a study of steroid abusers from a Chinese Chinese male population suggested no change in circulating testosterone levels, a cross-sectional study conducted in the United States suggested that the prevalence of low levels of testosterone has increased substantially (Prehn and Prehn 2005). In this study, the mean age at which men began using testosterone-derived steroids increased as young as 25 years (Figure 1).
